Although not required, barcode scanners are HIGHLY suggested for all computers running the Evergreen staff client.

Technical Requirements

Evergreen supports a “Keyboard Wedge”-type barcode scanner. This usually plugs in-line between the keyboard and the computer (for a PS2 version), or directly into a USB port. To the computer, it appears to be nothing more than a keyboard. When you scan an item, it appears to the computer that the numbers are being typed (albeit rapidly).…

There are two ways Bills are created within a patron record:

1. Evergreen automatically creates bills.

	* If a patron has an item checked out and that item becomes overdue, then the patron will be billed by the system for each day the item is overdue. You can click on Full Details on the Bill itself to see the individual charges and the note indicating Overdue Fine.

What are Bookbags? What are they used for?

Bookbags are containers. They can be used for any number of purposes. For example, to keep track of what books you have read, books you would like to read, to maintain a class reading list, to maintain a reading list for a book club, to keep a list of books you would like for your birthday. There are an unlimited number of uses.

Jon Udell created a neat little tool to allow OPAC users to search for library holdings from Amazon. This bookmarklet (which looks like a bookmark, but is actually a piece of JavaScript that builds a URL based on the ISBN scraped from the current Amazon page) resides in the Bookmarks Toolbar (at least in Firefox); to use it, click on the bookmark while viewing a book page in Amazon. Pre-Cataloged Material Checkout

Pre-cataloged items (or “fast adds”) are items that have a barcode but have not yet been fully cataloged. When they are checked out, you enter in a title and author. When the items are checked in, that information is cleared, and the item is routed to cataloging to be fully cataloged.

You can find patrons in the database by looking them up using their library card barcode, or you can search for them based on their name, address, or other information. Once you locate a patron record, you can view information about the patron or perform functions such as checking out books and paying bills.
