Fine Levels
Every copy has a flag called "fine_level" that determines the level with which the item

If a copy has been manually altered to "high" or "low", the fine level will change according
to the table below. For example, if a given item circulates…

General Conventions

As a general rule, Evergreen contributions should follow these basic conventions.

	* Indents - tabs vs. spaces
 * The general rule for all files needing indentation is 4 space indents, no literal tabs
 * The following file types are exceptions to this rule
 * Code written in C
 * Database schema/code files (.sql files)
 * Makefiles
 * Plain text files

A major goal of the Evergreen ILS Project is to become a long term, sustainable, community driven development effort. As such, it is necessary to define in concrete terms the acceptable procedures by which one can contribute to the overall improvement of Evergreen. There are many ways in which one can contribute, including, but not limited to, QA, bug fixes, code clean up, new features, enhancements to existing features, entirely new subsystems, end user documentation, technical documentation …

This wiki page contains project ideas and resources for students and mentors. Candidates who start a project with skills matching the Requires field will be able to be productive on a given project faster and will probably accomplish more over the course of the project, but project mentors are willing to help you develop those skills (particularly understanding of OpenSRF and Evergreen) if you don't already have them.

The Committee has decided that one of our priorities should be to identify all the user groups, undertake a needs assessment process, and perform a content inventory in order to develop a plan for revamping the evergreen-ils.org website. The goal is to make it easier for the various…

What I've decided to do for the time being is an informal/casual walkthrough of Evergreen, highlighting key features and benefits for end-users and developers alike, and maybe commenting on some future directions.
The following steps have been tested on the x86 (32-bit) and AMD64 (64-bit) hardware platforms. They were also used to create the Debian VMWare image.

In the following instructions, you are asked to perform certain steps as either the root user, the opensrf user, or the postgres user. To switch from the root user to a different user, use the su - <username> command; for example, su - opensrf. To become the root user again, simply use the exit command.

The opensrf_all and opensrf_ctl scripts will be installed into the BINDIR directory. opensrf_ctl is used to start the application services after jabber and the router have been started. opensrf_all starts Chop Chop, the router and application services, so it's the only script of the two you will need to use directly when first starting the system. If you ever want to restart the app servers only, then use opensrf_ctl by itself.

Bill and I have been puzzling over how to give HTTP clients support
for the more advanced features of OpenSRF, such as stateful,
transactional sessions and streaming responses. The main problem is
that HTTP is entirely stateless on its own, and OpenSRF is not. The
second biggest problem is that most current HTTP clients do not lend
themselves to the kind of connection control we'd like to have.

For just evaluating the software, or for a very small library (for example, 1 circulation station, a few thousand items, and infrequent online catalog use), any modern desktop or laptop made within the last 4 years capable of running Linux, FreeBSD, etc. should suffice, though I would recommend at least 512mb of RAM.

The Versioning Scheme

The Evergreen project follows a version numbering scheme similar to that used for the Linux kernel. This scheme uses a double-decimal format, such as “3.2.74”.

The first number (in our example, the number “3”) is a “Major” version number. This number will be incremented upon the release of an “extreme” update (such as a totally rewritten user interface).
